coreography over Haydn' s The creation

Gundula Janowitz, soprano

Margaret Price sings "Leise, leise" from "der Freischutz"

Schwarzkopf: Agathe's Aria (with translation)

Agathe's aria from Weber's "Der Freischütz".
English Translation:
How can I think of sleep,
Before I see him?
O yes, love and worry
Go ever hand in hand!
O moon do you laugh up there ?
(Opens the balcony door to reveal a starlit night)
What a lovely night!
(Goes out to the balcony and raises her hands in sweet rapture.)
(Leise, leise) Softly, Softly, my sweet song
Waft on up to starry sky!
Let my prayer
on pious journey
ring out to heaven's halls!
(looking out)
O how bright the golden stars,
With such pure gleam they shine!
Yet yonder, in distant hills
A storm seems a'gathering.
There too in the forest hover dark clouds
(Dumpf und schwer) Close and heavy.
(Zu dir wende) To you, O Lord,
Who has no beginning and no end,
I turn my hands.
To protect us
From all dangers
Send us forth your Angel hosts.
All now is long at rest,
My trusted friend, why your delay?
Though I listen with keen ear,
Only rustling in the fir tree tops,
Only whispering of birch leaves in the grove
Disturb the wondrous silence.
(Nachtigal und Grille) Only nightingale and cricket
Seem to enjoy the night air.
But wait? Do my ears deceive?
Could it be footsteps!
There, something is emerging from the trees
(Er ist's! er ist's!) It's him! It's him!
Love's banner can flutter.
(She waves a white handkerchief.)
Your girl keeps her vigil into the night.
He seems not yet to see me.
My God! let not the moonlight play tricks on me!
His hat is adorned with flowers.
For sure his was the best shot.
That bodes well for tomorrow.
O sweet hope, O courage renewed!
My blood races, my heart beats wild.
Attracted sweetly to him.
Can I dare to hope?
Yes, good fortune returns
To my dear beloved
And loyally stays tomorrow.
Am I mistaken? Am I mad?
O Heaven, receive these tears of thanks ..
For this token of hope!
My blood races, my heart beats wild.
Attracted sweetly to him ...
Attracted to him.

Weber-Der Freischütz Overture-Kleiber (1970)

Antonio Caldara - Maddalena ai piedi di Cristo (7)

Antonio Caldara - Maddalena ai piedi di Cristo (6)

1. Recitativo (Amor Celeste).

Di miei dordi possenti
di Maddalo la donna
or pentita ar dolente
è un sol troleo;
pugnó l'Amor Terreno,
e nel doice veleno
tingendo i strali suoi dei piacer vano
uni frode al valor, ma tutto invano.

Only by my mighty arrows
is that woman from Magdala,
penitent now, and now sorry,
become a trophy of victory.
Earthly Love, too, has fought,
and has, by tinging his darts
with the sweet venom of vain pleasure,
added fraud to his valour, but all in vain.

1. Aria (Amor Celeste).

Da quel strale che stilla veleno
beve l'alma un sol cieco furor.
Ma se il cielo con bello pietade
di quel strale scopre il mal,
sol rimane nell'alma il dolor.

From that arrow dripping with poison
the soul drinks nothing but fury.
But if heaven with gracious mercy
reveals that arrow's evil,
only sorrow remains in the soul.

Antonio Caldara - Maddalena ai piedi di Cristo (5)

1. Recitativo (Maddalena).

D'esser costante, o mio Gesú, non temo.
L'intelletto che, ottuso
d'una letra ignoranza,
con bugiarde apparenze
di pazza fantasia
spesso formava vani discorsi e falsi,
di pazza fantasia
dal tuo superno raggio,
che Amor Celeste accende, inflamma,
reso chiara et iltustre, di corregger confida
ogni fantasma van alla sua quida.

For my constancy, o my Jesus, 1 don't fear.
My mind, blunted
by dark ignorance,
has often with the delusive outgrowths
of a wild imagination produced vain
and false talk, but by your divine light
that, together with Celestial lave, fires and
inflames it, rendered clear and briqht, it
will entrust the clearing away of all illusions
to the guidance of that light.

2. Aria (Maddalena).

Per il mar del pionto mio
disprezzar soprò le pene.
Se, Gesú, sei Ia mia stella,
a te umilio il mio desio,
al tua piè son mie catene.

On the ocean of my tears
I,ll learn to disdain my pains.
If you, Jesus, be my lodestar,
for you will humbly long;
at your feet now lie my chains.

Antonio Caldara - Maddalena ai piedi di Cristo (4)

1. Recitativo (Marta, Maddalena).

Marta:

Maddalena, costanza,
stretta, ai piè tuo Dio
sorta dale procelle, aferri il porto;
degl'afflitti egli é sol dolce conforto.

Maddalena:

Sento crearmi un nuovo core in petto,
e uno spirito retto
nelle viscere mie già si rinnova;
spirto che in lacrimor
si gode or tanto ch'ogni contento
mio sta nel mio pionto.

Marta:

Piangi pur Maddalena,
coronato vedrassi oggi tua pena.

1. Recitativo (Marta, Maddalena).

Marta:

Magdalene, steadfast!
Keeping straight after your God,
escape the storms, reach the harbour;
to the afflicted He's the only sweet confort.

Maddalena:

I feel a new heart created in my bosom,
and a righteous spirit
being reborn inside of me;
a spirit that so much enjoys weeping
now that all my happiness lies in my tears.

Marta:

Go and cry, Magdalene,
today you'll see your suffering crowned.

2. Aria (Marta).

O fortunate lacrime
d'un vero afflitto cor.
Superbe sin all'etera
quidate un'alma mísera
cinto di bel splendor,

2. Aria (Marta).

Ah, you felicitous tears
of a truly afflicted heart!
Proudly to the ether's heights
guide this miserable soul,
wreathed in bright splendour.

Antonio Caldara - Maddalena ai piedi di Cristo (3)

1. Sinfonia.

2. Recitativo (Fariseo).

Donna ronde e fastosa,
savra le di cui gate unite assieme scherzando con amor danzan le grazie,
vanne altrove, che a stuolo
gl'amanti condurrai stretti in catena,
ma in si nobil congresso servir a tua beltà non é concesso.

O great and splendid lady,
on whose cheeks, together with Cupid,
the Graces frolick and dance,
go elsewhere, for you will lead lovers
captive and enchained by the pack.
But in such noble company as this
to serve your beauty is not permitted.

3. Aria (Fariseo).

Parti, che di virtú il gradito splendor
scorger non puoi.
Come moi tra foschi orror
di tue colpe la sua luce veder vuoi?

Leave, for virtue's welcome splendour
you cannot perceive.
How will you, beffoged by the darkness
of your sins, ever see its light?

4. Recitativo: (Maddalena, Cristo, Fariseo).

Maddalena:

Cingan pure quest'alma
mille nodi d'error, alio mia fama
oscurin Pombre loro;
dalle tenebre ancora
soprò cal pionto mio
for risorger un lume assai piú chiaro,
che sempre ai cielo un cor pentito é caro.
Signor ecco a' tuoi piedi,
chi per sui gravi errori
merta del giusto Iddio lo sdegno ultrice,
pentito, ecco, Signor, la peccatrice.

Cristo:

Se verace è il dolore,
é sicuro il perdono,
e tu sarai di vera penitenza
memorabile esempio.

Fariseo:

É questi un pariar empio.

Maddalena:

My Lord, to you I give myself entirely;
I vow to you a penitent's eternal loyaity.
And you, my grieving eyes, let your tears
flow,
while to your weeping my soul will answer
with a lamenting tangue;
ah, you, my all too wanton eyes,
ah, you, my ali too deaf soul,
how grave are the sins that you call
the lustiness of youth! O Lord, mercy!

Cristo:

If your grief is sincere,
iveness is certain,
and you shall be a memorable example
of true penitence.

Fariseo:

This is an impious way of speaking.

5. Aria - Maddalena:

Chi con sua cetra
si piacque all'etra
fra mille error
ebbe il suo cor e pianse.
Perciò pietà
travò dal ciel,
e pai fedel
d'ogni empietà i lacci franse.

She who with her cithern
once well pleased the ether,
had a heart full of thousands
of siris, but she bewailed them.
Therefore she was granted
mercy from heaven,
and then obediently
broke all ties to godlessness.

Antonio Caldara - Maddalena ai piedi di Cristo (2)

1. Recitativo (Maddalena):

Marta, ho risolto,
in seno deito grazia di Dio
la sprone ia sento, men' vado
ai piè di Cristo,
ivi faró del Paradiso acquisto.

2. Aria (Maddalena):

Voglio piongere sin che frangere
possa il nado che mi lega.
Sempre il cielo apparve amico
a' desiri, a'sospiri
d'un alma che prega.

3. Recitativo (Amor Celeste, Amor Terreno):

Amor Celeste:

A tua dispetto, Amor Terreno,
fia Maddalena pentita.

Amor Terreno:

Eh che il senso rubelle
è un compion troppo forte,
già m'accinguo alla pugna
ed aspra e dura.

Amor Celeste:

Un cor contra il piocer virtude indura.

4. A due (Amor Celeste, Amor Terreno):

La mia virtude il mio valor é forte.

Amor Terreno:

Il senso e un nemico...

Amor Celeste

Lo grazia é un amico...

A due:

Che sempre c'assiste insino alla morte.

1. Recitativo: Maddalena.

Martha, I am resolved;
in my breast I feel the spur
of the grace of God;
I'll go to the feet of Christ;
there I shall gain Paradise.

2. Aria (Maddalena):

I want to weep,
Till I can break,
the knot that holds me bound.
Heaven seems ever
to be receptive
towards the wishes and the sighs
of a soul that does pray.

3. Recitativo (Amor Celeste e Amor Terreno).

Amor Celeste:

Inspite of you, Earthly Love,
will Magdalene repent.

Amor Terreno:

Well, rebellious carnality
is a champion too strong for you;
I'm girding myself for a battle
that will be rough and tough.

Amor Celeste:

Virtue steels the heart against pleasure.

4. A due:

My virtue, my valour are strong.

Amor Terreno:

Carnality is a foe ...

Amor Celeste:

Grace is a friend...

A Due:

That helps us until we die.

Antonio Caldara - Maddalena ai piedi di Cristo

1. Sinfonia

2. Recitativo (Maddalena).

Oimè, troppo importuno
chi mi turba i riposi.
Dunque ancor, mentre al sonno in braccio sono,
all'acerbe mie pene.
tregua almen se non pace
travar moi non potrò?
E per qual legge, oh Dio,
a si barbara guerra
sempre aperto, steccato e'l petto mio
Cosi so stesso aggetto,
or amando or fuggendo,
tanto l'alma si turba,
ch'al mio tormento fiero
ogni breve conforto ancor dispero.

2. Recitativo (Maddalena).

Alas, too importunate is he
who disturbs my rest.
So then not even in the arms of Sleep
may I enjoy at least a truce,
if not peace, ever,
amidst the raging of my pains?
And according to what law, oh God,
is my heart, undecided amidst such
barbarous warring, always pierced,
my mind agitated in such a fierce battle?
It seems two Magdalenes live in my heart,
and in my mind not l'ust one will but two.
I would like to follow the path
that no beam of false 1ight makes glitter,
but I do like pleasure, tough its
fleeting flash will quickly disapppear.
Thus the some cause,
loving it now, avoiding it then,
troubles my soul so much
I despair of any respite in this
my fierce torment,
be it ever so brief.

2. Aria (Maddalena).

In un bivio é il mio valere
di seguir il mondo o il cielo.
Un sentier calmo è di rose,
ha le vie l'altro lo stelo.

2. Aria (Maddalena).

At the crossroads stands my mind, to choose the world's way or Heaven's.
One path is brimming with roses,
the other has thomy walks;
one has the flowers, the other the stem.

Bless this House, O Lord we pray;
Make it safe by Night and Day.
Bless these Walls so firm and stout,
keeping Want and Trouble out.

Bless the Roof and Chimney tall.
Let Thy Peace lie over all.
Bless this Door that it may prove...
Ever open to Joy and Love

Bless these Windows shining bright,
Letting in God's Heavenly Light.
Bless the hearth a'blazing there
With smoke ascending like a Prayer.

Bless the People here within.
Keep them pure and free from Sin.
Bless us all that we may be
Fit, O Lord, to dwell with thee.

Bless us all that we, one day,
May dwell O Lord with thee.

Rudolf Schock: Ach, ich hab' in meinem Herzen

Ach, ich hab' in meinem Herzen da drinnen
Einen wundersamen Schmerz.
Ja, mir ist mit einem Mal tief da drinnen,
So ganz wundersam ums Herz.
All' meine Blumen will ich Dir schenken,
Und ich will immerfort an Dich denken.
Ach, ich hab' in meinem Herzen da drinnen
Einen wundersamen Schmerz.

All' meine Jugendjahre
Hob dieser Augenblick zurück.
All, meine Wanderjahre

Oh, I have in my heart deep down,
A wondrous pain and ache.
Yes, I feel from there inside me
So strange around my heart.
All flowers I have I will give you
For ever my thoughts are of you.
Oh, I have in my heart this feeling,
Of a wondrous pain and ache.

All through my young years
This picture was there in my eye.
All my years of absence
Searching for happiness filled.
Many a night with dreams so proud,
You know: while away my heart had
Only thoughts of home,
Yes, only thoughts of home.

To wander alone
Is a hardship to bear
How empty this life.
With others not there.
Oh think of our love,
And trust to our fate
Close eyes and dream
Our joy to create.

Oh, I have in my heart

Lucia Popp: Solveig's Song from Grieg's Peer Gynt

Her skal jeg vente til du kommer igjen;
og venter du hist oppe, vi træffes der, min Ven!

The winter may pass and the spring disappear
The spring disappear
The summer too will vanish and then the year
And then the year
But this I know for certain: you'll come back again
You'll come back again
And even as I promised you'll find me waiting then
You'll find me waiting then

Oh-oh-oh ....

God help you when wand'ring your way all alone
Your way all alone
God grant to you his strength as you'll kneel at his throne
As you'll kneel at his throne
If you are in heaven now waiting for me
In heaven for me
And we shall meet again love and never parted be
And never parted be!

Oh-oh-oh ....

RODELINDA-BERTARIDO
(Duet)

Io t'abbraccio
E più che morte, aspro e forte,
è pel cor mio questo addio,
che il tuo sen dal mio divide.

Ah mia vita,
ah mio tesoro, se non moro,
è più tiranno quell'affanno,
che dà morte, e non uccide.

Recitativo:

Son pur felice al fine.
Ahi! Per la tenerezza
Sento stemprarmi il core.
Parmi veder sull'etra
Per sì fausto Imeneo tutte le stelle
Rider più liete, e scintillar più belle.

Aria:

Bel contento già gode quest'alma
Né più teme d'avere a penar,
che d'Amore la placida calma
il mio seno qui giunge a bear.

Translation

Recitative:

I am happy, at last!
Ah, I feel my heart dissolve in tenderness!
It seems to me I see up in the skies
-because of such a fortunate marriage-
all the stars smile more brightly
and scintillate more beautifully.

Aria:

Now my soul enjoys sweet content
nor fears it must suffer again,
for the peaceful calm of Love
is come to bless my heart.

There is something wrong with our world when love becomes arctic allowing ice to pump through our veins that we can't sing or compose the way we used too. Maybe love is going through a severe famine? Even in the pop world it's all about sex and image. Love has died. The poet's ink arid in bitterness. The mellow mood of lifes tone has become dead and music has died with it. The composer performs before dead people who no longer feel, but hate.

If I fell in love with you-The beatles

If I fell in love with you
would you promise to be true
And help me understand
'Cause I've been in love before
And I've found that love is more
That just holding hands

If I gave my heart to you
I must be sure from the very start
that you would love me more than her

If I trust in you, oh please
don't run and hide,
if I love you too, oh please
don't hurt my pride like her

Ne me quitte pas en anglais- if you go away - Dustin Springfield

If you go away
On this summers day
Then you might as well take the sun away
All the birds that flew in the summer sky
When our love was new
And our hearts were high
And the day was young
And the nights were long
The trees stood still for the night birds song

If you go away
If you go away
If you go away

And if you stay
Ill make you a day
Like no day has been
Or will be again
Ill sail on the sun
Ill ride on the rain
Ill talk to the trees
And Ill worship the wind
But if you go
Ill understand
Leave me just enough love
To fill up my hand

If you go away
If you go away
If you go away

If you go away
As I know you will
You must tell the world to stop turning , turning
Til you return again
If you ever do
For what good is love
Without loving you
Let me tell you now
As you turn to go
Ill be dying slowly
Til your next hello

If you go away
If you go away
If you go away

But if you stay,
Ill make you a night
Like no night has been
Or will be again
Ill sail on you smile
Ill ride on your touch
Oh, Ill talk to your eyes
How I love them so much
But if you go
I wont cry
For the good is gone
In the word goodbye

If you go away
Please dont go away
Please dont go away

Please dont leave me
I wont cry anymore
I wont talk anymore
Ill hide in your room
And Ill watch you
As you dance and you smile
And Ill listen a while
As you sing and you laugh
Please let me become
The shadow of your shadow
The shadow of your hand
The shadow of your glass
On this shadow of a man

Please dont leave me
Please stay
Please dont go away

And if you stay
Ill make you a day
Like no day has been
Or will be again
Ill sail on the sun
Ill ride on the rain
Ill talk to the trees
And Ill worship the wind
But if you go
Ill understand
Leave me just enough love
To fill up my hand

If you go away
Please dont go away
Please dont go away

Dustin Springfield- The look of love-Burt Bacharac

It isnt the way that you look
And it isnt the way that you talk
It isnt the things that you say or do
Make me want you so

It is nothing to do with the wine
Or the music thats flooding my mind
But never before have I been so sure
Youre the someone I dreamed I would find

Its the way you make me feel
The moment I am close to you
Its a feeling so unreal
Somehow I cant believe its true
The pounding I feel in my heart
The hoping that well never part
I cant believe this is really happening to me

I close my eyes and count to ten
And when I open them youre still here
I close my eyes and count again
I cant believe it but youre still here

We were strangers a moment ago
With a few dreams but nothing to show
The world was a place
With a frown on its face
And tomorrow was just, I dont know

But the way you make me feel
The moment I am close to you
Makes today seem so unreal
Somehow I cant believe its true
Tomorrow will you still be here?
Tomorrow will come but I fear
That what is happening to me
Is only a dream

I close my eyes and count to ten
And when I open them youre still here
I close my eyes and count again
I cant believe it but youre still here
I close my eyes and count to ten
And when I open them youre still
here

Sting- The windmills of your mind

Round, like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel.
Never ending or beginning,
On an ever spinning wheel
Like a snowball down a mountain
Or a carnaval balloon
Like a carousell that's turning
Running rings around the moon

Like a clock whose hands are sweeping
Past the minutes on it's face
And the world is like an apple
Whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind

Like a tunnel that you follow
To a tunnel of it's own
Down a hollow to a cavern
Where the sun has never shone
Like a door that keeps revolving
In a half forgotten dream
Or the ripples from a pebble
Someone tosses in a stream.

Like a clock whose hands are sweeping
Past the minutes on it's face
And the world is like an apple
Whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind

Keys that jingle in your pocket
Words that jangle your head
Why did summer go so quickly
Was it something that I said
Lovers walking allong the shore,
Leave their footprints in the sand
Was the sound of distant drumming
Just the fingers of your hand

Pictures hanging in a hallway
And a fragment of this song
Half remembered names and faces
But to whom do they belong
When you knew that it was over
Were you suddenly aware
That the autumn leaves were turning
To the color of her hair

Like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning,
On an ever spinning wheel
As the images unwind
Like the circle that you find
In the windmills of your mind

Pictures hanging in a hallway
And the fragment of this song
Half remembered names and faces
But to whom do they belong
When you knew that it was over
Were you suddenly aware
That the autumn leaves were turning
To the color of her hair

Like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning,
On an ever spinning wheel
As the images unwind
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind

There are things we have to be reminded of

On the last day, Jesus will say to those on His right hand, "Come, enter the Kingdom. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was sick and you visited me." Then Jesus will turn to those on His left hand and say, "Depart from me because I was hungry and you did not feed me, I was thirsty and you did not give me to drink, I was sick and you did not visit me." These will ask Him, "When did we see You hungry, or thirsty or sick and did not come to Your help?" And Jesus will answer them, "Whatever you neglected to do unto one of these least of these, you neglected to do unto Me!"

Bless us all ,oh my Lord

Our Father, who art in heaven
hallowed be thy Name
thy kingdom come
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom
and the power, and the glory
for ever and ever.
Amen.

But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does. If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not control his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one's religion is useless. Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, help the ones who are suffering and to keep oneself unspotted from the world." (James 1:22-27)

It hurt Jesus to love us. We have been created in his image for greater things, to love and to be loved. We must "put on Christ," as Scripture tells us. And so we have been created to love as he loves us. Jesus makes himself the hungry one, the naked one, the homeless one, the unwanted one, and he says, "You did it to me." On the last day he will say to those on his right, "whatever you did to the least of these, you did to me," and he will also say to those on his left, "whatever you neglected to do for the least of these,
you neglected to do it for me."Mother teresa from Calcuta"

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender,
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even to the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons;
they are vexatious to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain or bitter,
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs,
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals,
and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love,
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment,
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life,
keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

Sermon on the mount

The Beatitudes

1
Now when He saw the crowds, He went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to Him,
2
and He began to teach them, saying:
3
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
5
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
6
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
7
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
8
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
9
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.
10
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11
"Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me.
12
Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
The Salt and Light
13
"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.
14
"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.
15
Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.
16
In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
Teaching About the Law
17
"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
18
I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.
19
Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
20
For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.
Teaching About Anger
21
"You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, `Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.'
22
But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, `Raqa, ' is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, `You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell.
23
"Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you,
24
leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift.
25
"Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still with him on the way, or he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison.
26
I tell you the truth, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.
Teaching About Adultery
27
"You have heard that it was said, `Do not commit adultery.'
28
But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
29
If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.
30
And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.
Teaching About Divorce
31
"It has been said, `Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.'
32
But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits adultery.
Teaching About Oaths
33
"Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, `Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the Lord.'
34
But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God's throne;
35
or by the earth, for it is His footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King.
36
And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black.
37
Simply let your `Yes' be `Yes,' and your `No,' `No'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.
Teaching About Revenge
38
"You have heard that it was said, `Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.'
39
But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.
40
And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well.
41
If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.
42
Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.
Love of Enemies
43
"You have heard that it was said, `Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.'
44
But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
45
that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
46
If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that?
47
And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?
48
Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Chapter 6
Giving to the Needy

1
"Be careful not to do your `acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
2
"So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.
3
But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
4
so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Teaching About Prayer
5
"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.
6
But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
7
And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.
8
Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
9
"This, then, is how you should pray: "`Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
10
your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
11
Give us today our daily bread.
12
Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. '
14
For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
15
But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
Teaching About Fasting
16
"When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.
17
But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face,
18
so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Treasures in Heaven
19
"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.
20
But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.
21
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also
The Light of the Body
22
"The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light.
23
But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
God and Money
24
"No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.
Depend on God
25
"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?
26
Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?
27
Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life ?
28
"And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin.
29
Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.
30
If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
31
So do not worry, saying, `What shall we eat?' or `What shall we drink?' or `What shall we wear?'
32
For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.
33
But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
34
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Chapter 7
Judging Others

1
"Do not judge, or you too will be judged.
2
For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.
3
"Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?
4
How can you say to your brother, `Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when all the time there is a plank in your own eye?
5
You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.
Pearls Before Swine
6
"Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and then turn and tear you to pieces.

The Answer to Prayers
7
"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.
8
For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.
9
"Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone?
10
Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?
11
If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask Him!
The Golden Rule
12
So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.
The Narrow and Wide Gates
13
"Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.
14
But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
False Prophets
15
"Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.
16
By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?
17
Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.
18
A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.
19
Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
20
Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.
The True Disciple
21
"Not everyone who says to Me, `Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven.
22
Many will say to Me on that day, `Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?'
23
Then I will tell them plainly, `I never knew you. Away from Me, you evildoers!'
The Two Foundations
24
"Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
25
The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.
26
But everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.
27
The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash."
28
When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at His teaching,
29
because He taught as One who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.
